Sept. 30 is deadline for $500-per-child economic impact payment
September 30, 2020 is the end of the registration period for certain persons who receive federal benefits (e.g., Social Security benefits) but who didn’t already receive the $500-per-child portion of the COVID-19-related economic impact payment (EIP).
To facilitate the payment of EIPs, IRS created a new on-line tool that “non-filers” can use to register for their EIPs (“Non-Filers tool”). (IR 2020-69, 4/10/2020)
September 30 deadline. As initially announced in, 8/14/2020, that certain persons who receive federal benefits but who didn’t receive $500-per-child payments earlier this year should use the Non-Filers tool by September 30 to enter information on their qualifying children in order to receive the supplemental $500 payments.
To be eligible to provide this information, the taxpayer must: a) have a qualifying child(ren); b) receive Social Security retirement, survivor or disability benefits, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Railroad Retirement benefits (RRB), or VA Compensation and Pension benefits; c) not have filed a tax return in 2018 or 2019; and d) not have already used the Non-Filers tool to provide information about their qualifying child(ren).
Anyone using the Non-Filers tool can speed up the arrival of their payment by choosing to receive it by direct deposit. Those who don’t choose direct deposit will get a check.
People who’ve already used the Non-Filers tool to provide info on a child(ren) don’t need to do anything else. IRS will automatically make a payment to them in October.
